My Approach & Experience
My Approach
My approach to art therapy is client-centered, with a focus on art-making and trusting the creative process. For me, art-making is the key discipline, and so I will always bring it back to that in our therapeutic relationship.
My practice is grounded in a humanistic, trauma-informed, and mindfulness-based approach. I work from a client-centred, transpersonal, and existential perspective—honouring each person’s innate creativity, autonomy, and capacity for healing. Art-making provides a symbolic and expressive language to explore emotion, meaning, and transformation.
My approach to art therapy is informed by the work of Bruce Moon and Carl Jung, with a deep respect for symbolism, image-making, and the wisdom that emerges through creative process. Whether working in person or virtually, I focus on holding a safe, attuned space where clients are met with curiosity, care, and without judgment. Art therapy sessions are invitational and collaborative—there is no right or wrong way to create, and no expectation of artistic skill. I welcome individuals of all backgrounds and identities, and strive to create a space where people feel supported in exploring their inner world at their own pace.
My Experience
I am a Registered Therapeutic Counsellor (RTC) with the Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists of Canada (ACCT) and a professional member of the Canadian Art Therapy Association (CATA). I hold specialized training in art therapy and have experience working with individuals and groups in diverse clinical and community settings.
My background includes working as an art therapist at the Dr. Peter Centre in Vancouver, providing trauma-informed creative therapy for adults living with complex health and life challenges.
I also have experience working with seniors living with dementia through Providence Health Care, supporting emotional connection, sensory engagement, and self-expression through creative processes.
I bring extensive experience working with diverse populations across healthcare, community, and clinical settings. My work has included supporting adults living with HIV/AIDS, mental health challenges, and substance use, as well as seniors living with dementia in long-term care environments. I have also facilitated art therapy and creative programming with adolescents and teens, offering both individual and group-based support. Across all settings, my practice is grounded in collaboration, adaptability, and respect for each person’s lived experience.
First and foremost, I am a painter with over 25 years of experience and hold a degree in Fine Art, which informs and enriches my art therapy practice. Across all settings, my work is grounded in collaboration, adaptability, and respect for each person’s lived experience.
My Story
I was born and raised in Northern Ireland, a country deeply rooted in socio-political unrest. After completing my Foundation in Art from Limavady College in 1997, I went on to earn a BA in Fine Art from Coventry University in 2000. Since then, I have participated in numerous art exhibitions—both solo and as part of artist collectives in the UK and Canada.
In 2020, I began my art therapy journey when I enrolled with the Vancouver Art Therapy Institute to earn my diploma. When I discovered art therapy through a mutual friend, I was immediately drawn to it. I have always enjoyed supporting people from all walks of life, and pursuing art therapy as a career felt like the perfect path to combine my passion for art with helping others.
I am truly honoured to be an art therapist and to walk alongside people as they explore, express, and heal through art-making.
“Every paint streak, each chalk line, every slab of colour harmonious and dissonant, declares that I am, I am here and I have something to express.” ”
